Hi! I am Dian, an Indonesian living in Alanya, Turkey.
My marriage brought me to this beautiful city and beautiful country. But my home country is more beautiful than this of course 😀
I am married to a Turkish man from Alanya. In October 2001, we met for the first time in the cyber world and 4 years later he came to Bandung Indonesia to marry me.
Back in 2005, it was my first time abroad. After our wedding, I followed my husband to his hometown, Alanya. It was not easy, but I had to get used to so many things: language, food, weather, and of course the people. It was not easy, but I managed all that.
I love cooking and I learned to how to do it from my mom-in-law. I am lucky because she has always been very nice to me. While cooking, we also learned each other languages and soon I could easily remember all names of veggies, fruits, and spices.
Now, I have a new skill: cooking Turkish food. I wrote my favorite dishes on my personal blog.
Learning a new language
“Merhaba” (Hi), “Nasılsın?” (how are you?), “iyiyim” (I am fine), “teşekkür ederim” (thank you), were the only words of Türkçe (Turkish language) that I knew when I arrived.
And the very same day of my arrival in Alanya my husband started to speak only in Turkish to me and stopped English altogether. I felt that I was forced into learning too fast a new and difficult language.
Despite the stress I went thru at the beginning, maybe that was the only way for me. Here in Turkey, people only speak Turkish and I would have been cut off the whole world. So I learned as fast as I could and, in the end, I learned it so well that I even won a reading competition between all parents at my daughter’s school. All participants were Turkish, except me the only foreigner. Actually, that competition was held twice and I won both times!
I have my own Telegram channel for sharing Türkçe. Everyone is welcome to join my channel and learn.
After 12 years in Turkey, I still can’t deal with the seasons. Even if people say that Alanya is a place with almost tropical weather in winter, for me the winter in Alanya is very cold and I always wear 2 blouses + 2 jackets (plus underwear, of course), thermal tights and skirt, gloves for my hands, and two pairs of socks for my feet!
Summer instead is too hot for me. It can be 55°C in Alanya.
Overall, Alanya is a beautiful city. I feel that I am on vacation every day. Alanya is a popular holiday destination for European tourists, both in summer and winter. Many of them also buy houses, villas or apartments here
