Russia has strict visa rules when compared to the rest of Europe. It is fundamental to know what is visa and works permit requirements in order to be able as a foreigner to live, work, or study in the Russian Federation.

A foreign citizen can obtain a tourist visa to Russia only in the country of his/her citizenship. Exceptions include those who have a residence permit for a foreign country for the period more than 90 days. However, the final decision is left up to the consulates.

Work visa in Russia

In order to work in the Russian Federation, foreign nationals need both a Russian work permit and a work visa. They can only apply for a Russian work permit and visa if they have received a job offer from a Russian employer.

The number of employment permits available for overseas workers is decided every year by government quotas.

Foreigners cannot enter Russia on a visa other than a work visa and start working.

Commonwealth of Independent States citizens

Nationals from the Commonwealth of Independent States don’t require a Russian work permit and visa or a guaranteed job offer from a Russian employer. They just have to apply for a work patent within 30 days of arriving in Russia and find a job within 60 days of receiving the work patent.

Self-employed visa in the Russian Federation

It is also possible to apply for a Russian work permit and visa as self-employed. Applicants need to apply to the GUVM for the permit themselves. A letter of support from an individual or Russian organization is advisable.

Businessmen visa

Businessmen can apply for a Business Visa rather than a work visa. Applicants will be eligible for a Russian residence permit provided they invest a certain amount of money in Russia
